Description:

The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, will be the highest intensity neutron source in the world. The Wigner Research Centre is part of this international collaboration and involved both in the design and implementation of new neutron scattering instruments. One of these instruments is the VOR (Variable Optimal Resolution) direct time-of-flight (DTOF) spectrometer. DTOF technique is generally used to measure the energy of dispersive excitatios in materials within the range from 0.1meV to 80 meV. VOR is foreseen to provide unparalleled possibilities for investigations of the dynamics of materials from biology to magnetism where the short life-time of the samples or transient effects need fast measurement on broad energy range.

The PhD candidate will join the group designing VOR. His/her main role will be the optimization of the instrument parameters taking into account
the latest improvements in the ESS source design and the neutron optics as well. The optimization needs both analytical and Monte-Carlo model calculations.
The work includes also experimental research of molecular dynamics of materials by taking part in neutron spectroscopy investigations at the
Budapest Neutron Centre or other European neutron facilities (e.g HZ-Berlin, ILL-Grenoble).

Requirements:

English knowledge and ability to describe and solve problems in analytical way are required. Programming skills in Matlab, Python or C is advantageous,
knowledge of neutron/X-ray scattering methods and neutron optics is highly advantageous.
