Flow of granular materials

PhD type:
Fizikai Tudományok Doktori Iskola
Year:
2020/2021/1
Unit:
KFKI Wigner Fizikai Kutatóközpont
Address of unit:
1121 Budapest, Konkoly-Thege Miklós út 29-33
Description:
The flow or stability of granular materials often involves unpredictable phenomena such as avalanches, landslides, etc. The present research topic focuses on basic properties of
granular flows or granular materials under load, with special emphasis on phenomena arising from the shape of the grains (non-spherical, elongated, irregular) or the surface friction. Laboratory experiments will be performed using high speed imaging or tomographic methods. Various geometries are considered including simple shear flows, inclined plane flows or hopper flows. The goal is to determine the particle configurations (particle motion, particle orientation) during flow and deformation of the sample.
